Also known as the Garage Mahal, the Car Art Museum is a private institution dedicated to contemporary art with a strong emphasis on car Art. It opened in February 1988 and since then it hasn’t ceased to impress art and car lovers. It is also the largest car art parade in the world, so be ready to see some really cool stuff!

As Houston is famous for its car art culture that has deep roots in the city’s history, its car culture is more than driving. That is the main reason why the Car Art Museum is opened all year round. It always has some new and interesting exhibits to show. The collections you’ll find here vary from non-car-based art made by Houston’s car art artists to bizarrely decorated automobiles, motorcycles, bicycles and many other types of vehicles.

The whole museum offers a great glimpse into the effort and creativity that artists had to put to transform old cars into unique art masterpieces. They used different paints, glues, accessories, and even some objects to make their cars stand out. The exterior and interior are richly decorated by numerous individuals who still drive their creations daily. If that sounds interesting, maybe you should take one of those Houston automobile decoration ideas and transform your own vehicle?

Temporary car art exhibitions

In addition to ever-changing exhibits, the Car Art Museum hosts several temporary car art exhibitions. If you thought you saw everything, now you’ll see you are wrong. Among all those car adrenaline vibes, you will find strange ones as well. For example, a giant rabbit holding a basket of eggs. That is actually a car named Rex Rabbit. It’s in the company of Faith, an unusual car with a huge water-buffalo head instead of the front of the car. Here is another piece of unique car art named Rochester. As you can already guess, the car looks like a gigantic roach. It is just a small part of a wide section of unusual car decorations, so don’t forget to bring your camera. These moments are worth capturing.

Another great thing about this car museum is that it can be a springboard for all artists who are at the beginning of their career launch. It also displays some three-dimensional works of art that can be surprising and shocking, which is something completely different from the usual museums’ exhibits.

The Car Art Museum is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 11 am until 6 pm. There is no admission, and the location couldn’t be better – 140 Heights Boulevard, in the center of downtown Houston.

For all art and philosophy lovers, the Car Art Museum brings a special treat. An amazing work by a famous artist and philosopher, Fernando Casas, will be at your disposal for the whole two months.

The centerpiece of his exhibition is ‘The Fourfold’, an incredible installation of four huge panels inspired by philosopher Martin Heidegger. Those large panels you will see are actually the four basic categories of reality that can be found in every human being. Earth, Sky, Mortals, and Immortals. Casas took them over from Heidegger’s work but, as you will see, he replaced the last one with all those immortal things he finds inspiring: Philosophy, Mathematics, Science, Logic, Art, Ethics, and Aesthetics. It’s a delightful way to see how immortal values can form us as people.

After admiring The Fourfold, don’t forget to check out his typical mixed media pieces, large-oil paintings, and prints that are produced in Houston.

On the other hand, you will also have an opportunity to enjoy the rare and never before shown drawings that were done in Casas’ country of origin, Bolivia.

So, if you ever wanted to know more about this mindful artist, now is your chance.
